Range Update 4/20/11

by Cowlitz Game & Anglers ~ April 20th, 2011. Filed under: Range Development.

IT IS A GO !!!

Final contract with Cowlitz County will be signed Tuesday, 26 April. This will firmly install Cowlitz County as the owner of the Range. This allows the County to guarantee the surety bond requirement of the “Toxic” materials clean-up should the Range ever stop being used (unlikely in our lifetime).

CG&A will collect a fee between 50 cents and a dollar per shooter which will then be deposited in an interest bearing account with the County to offset this undefinable future event.

Cowlitz Game & Anglers will still be the developer, funding provider, operator and maintenance provider. Our Range design committee met today at the Clark Rifles Range in Clark County to review the features of that 60 year old, well endowed, facility. Our Civil Engineer was also there . We have made final adjustments to range configuration. Final grading dwgs should be released in about 2 weeks.

The shooting house deck will be four feet below grade to reduce noise toward existing homes. The floor of the range will be lowered and step graded to allow shooting at targets at 100 yds, 200 yds, and 300 yds without mutual interference. We have determined a cost effective design for the bullet baffles that will not allow a bullet to escape the range.
We believe architect dwgs can be ready in about 4 weeks or less. If we can complete all 44 documents to satisfy Special Land Use Permit provisios we can then enter final building permit applications to Cowlitz County by May 31. It is possible Building & Planning will be able to process our permits by June 25. (Hopefully)

We could begin grading about July 1. Shooting by November 2011. Lets hope for the best. There’s still plenty of red tape to wade through but… we are off and running. Now is the time for all shooters to donate toward the building fund. We need about $30,000 to augment our existing $150,000. We still need some strong fund raising effort and a little luck !
